Time to Review: Modified Nationals thoughts 
I decided to come to the 14th annual Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals at Grays Harbor Raceway last weekend and I have to say I was very pleased with everything. I saw two, three, and even four-wide racing! I absolutely love the format, especially when two rounds of heat races and the ASCS points format are being used. The cars line straight up by qualifying in the first round of the heats, and then it’s totally inverted for round two. It’s very entertaining to see the faster cars start in the back and try to get some passing points.

I was kind of bummed about the turnout of 42 cars, but all of the drivers put on a show. Quality pays off rather than quantity sometimes.

2011 Modified Nationals champion Kyle Casson jumped out to the lead from the inside of the second row in Friday’s 30-lap Race of Champions, and he didn’t look back. Kyle caught a lucky break on the third lap when he got sideways in turn one and made contact with the second place car of Craig Hanson. Craig spun out, with Lawrence O’Connor getting collected. Craig would finish sixth and Lawrence would be eighth. After slipping back to tenth on the opening lap, Collen Winebarger passed Aaron Sheelar for second at the line on lap six. Craig Moore took third from Sheelar out of turn two on the eighth lap, then defending Mod Nats winner Mark Wauge duplicated that move two laps later for fourth. The second yellow flag was needed on lap 18, when Curt Coggins stopped in turn one. Winebarger’s car didn’t take off on the restart and dropped to fourth, allowing Moore and Wauge to go by. Brody Pompe’s great night came to an end on lap 22 when he spun in turn two, with Kyler Moore no place to go. Brody’s car had significant damage and it was enough to end his weekend. He would’ve been fourth in points and securely in Saturday’s A-Main had he not scratched. Winebarger lost fourth place with just two laps to go, as he blew out his driveshaft in turn one. Casson wouldn’t be denied as he won the preview to the big show. Wauge was second, 15th-starting Jeremy Shank was third, 17th-starting Mark Carrell fourth, and C. Moore fifth.

Grays Harbor Raceway champions Joe German and Scott Miller shared the front row in Saturday’s 40-lap main event, with German getting the jump. Miller’s car didn’t get going and went straight to the pits. Joe paced the field for the first three laps before Nick Trenchard inherited it at the finish line on lap number four. This race had seven yellow flags, but the excitement didn‘t let up. Casson made his presence known on lap 17, as he passed Wauge for second on the frontstretch. Shank followed suit out on the backchute, dropping Wauge to fourth. Casson tried multiple times to pass Trenchard, but Nick was really strong on the high side. Shank passed Casson for second on lap 25 out of turn four, but that pass didn’t count when Sheelar stopped in turn two. Wauge’s hopes to win two straight Mod Nats were eliminated, as he stopped in turn two on the 29th lap. Casson went for the kill on lap 31 when he tried a slide job on Trenchard in turns three and four, but it backfired and he spun in front of the whole field. Luckily, no one else was involved. That gave the second spot to Shank, and he made the low line stick on Trenchard going into turn three with just four laps to go. Shank would get the win with Trenchard and Troy McElroy second and third. Unfortunately for Nick and Troy, their mighty performances were all for naught and both were disqualified in postrace tech. Jeremy Richey became the runner-up for a 1-2 Oregon finish. 20th-starting C. Moore moved up to third to be the highest-finishing GHR regular, with 21st-place starter Jerry Schram crossing the line fourth. Craig and Jerry had to come through the last chance qualifiers. Jerry won the first LCQ and Craig snared the second one. Jerry didn’t race on Friday and began his Saturday night at the tail of the C-Main. German rounded out the top five.

With Shank’s victory, that makes it seven different winners in the last seven Modified Nationals. Glenn and Lisa Vincent of Shipwreck Beads organized a tremendous event and it’ll continue to grow. I’m already looking forward to going to the Mod Nats a second time. Let’s flip through the pages, shall we?

Oregon Obliterates, Part III: This is the third straight column where racers from Oregon had the heat races well in hand. That happened again on Friday. They won four heats in the first round (Carrell, Wauge, Trenchard, and Joey Tanner) and three in round two (Tom Berry, Jr., Albert Gill, and Trenchard). Washington claimed two heats in the second round, with German and Jeff Foster getting the victories. Casson picked up the win in the first heat race of the night for the state of California. Kyle was the only driver from Cali in attendance.

Local Yokels: When the top ten drivers in points came on the track on Saturday for the pill redraw to determine their starting positions, it looked like everything would work out for the Grays Harbor regulars. Miller drew a 2, and Foster pulled out the 3 pill. Getting the 1 pill was German to make it an all-GHR top three for the A-Main. German led laps one through three and wound up finishing fifth. Foster ran in the top ten for just over half of the race before going to the pits on lap 25 and didn’t return. He dropped to 19th. Miller had all kinds of problems from the start and fell to 22nd.

A Rollercoaster Ride: If there’s a guy that an up-and-down weekend, it’s surely Hanson. Craig spun out twice during Friday’s heats and again early on in the Race of Champions. It wasn’t all bad, as Craig made a great recovery to sixth. Saturday came and it looked like his luck will stay good. He led all 20 laps in the C-Main to move on to the B. He started 15th in the B, but almost passed Cooper on the last couple of corners to finish a close second and completed the “alphabet soup” route. However, Craig’s fortune went back to bad when he and Matt Jenner did a double spin in turns one and two on a lap 25 restart. Craig was knocking on the door for a top ten spot when he wrecked in turn one on the last lap just before Shank took the checkered flag. Craig climbed out okay and was credited with 12th.

Moving On Up: Along with C. Moore and Schram, a few other drivers that started deep in the pack in Saturday’s A-Main made their way towards the front when it‘s all said and done. Jesse Bailey climbed 13 positions to cross the line in 11th. Medford, Oregon veteran Dane Smith improved eleven places to seventh. Montesano native Morgan Criswell scaled up ten spots to 13th. 2008 Mod Nats winner Blair Shoemaker and Jenner moved up eight spots each to come home sixth and 14th, respectively.

Last-Second Addition: Carrell was supposed to start eighth in Saturday’s main event, but pulled into the pits with mechanical problems. The first alternate was Bailey, who finished third in the first LCQ. Jesse was in the second and last transfer spot until the last lap when he got held up by the lapped car of Scott Westley, and Criswell snuck by in turn three. Jesse had his car in his trailer and was out of his driver’s suit when the news about Carrell broke out. Jesse hustled to get his car ready again and started at the tail of the A. He just missed the top ten in 11th place, but he got himself a much better result to his Modified Nationals and also a bigger paycheck.

Number for the Weekend: 10. Washington drivers made up just under half of the field in Saturday’s big dance, but the Oregon group prevailed once again.

Consistency Award: C. Moore. Craig was the top Washington driver in the main events both nights. He qualified midpack on Friday (19th out of 41 cars) and didn’t do all that great in the heats, but made it up in the Race of Champions and Saturday’s feature. Phil Martelli told fans to keep their eyes on the #M14 car to make an impact, and the Seabeck ace did just that. Craig cashed in big on Trenchard and McElroy’s disqualifications to get a podium spot.

Hard Luck Award: Winebarger. Collen’s qualifying lap on Friday got thrown out when he didn’t make weight during tech and made only one heat race. He was running in fourth with two laps left in the Race of Champions when his car momentarily caught fire and his driveshaft was left lying in turn one. The driveshaft was so hot that I can smell it from my seat! Collen’s weekend ended after the first night, along with Pompe and Tanner.

Next race: The Monster Meltdown at Skagit Speedway on August 30 and 31 with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series and the Outlaw Tuner Car Combat Series (not sure about the WoO race at GHR on September 2). The Outlaws make their annual trip to the Pacific Northwest on Labor Day weekend. This year, they’ll stop at Skagit first before heading down to Elma. Kerry Madsen took last year’s preliminary main event at Skagit and was looking to go for the sweep for night number two. However, he jumped the start and was penalized one row. That gave Travis Jacobson all he needed for a very popular win. Sammy Swindell led all 30 laps in last year’s race at GHR, and also tied a track record in qualifying.

Jumping the Start: 14th Annual Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals 
Grays Harbor Raceway will host the 14th running of the Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals this Friday and Saturday. The event attracts drivers from the western United States and parts of Canada.

Friday will have time trials, two rounds of heat races, and the Race of Champions to finish it off. The Race of Champions is a 30-lap event where champions of the Mod Nats or at their respective home tracks battle it out.

The dashes and main events are on tap for Saturday. There will also be two last chance qualifiers that will give drivers one last shot of making the A-Main. Two drivers transfer from each LCQ.

Last year's champion Mark Wauge will attend, along with past champions Kyle Casson (2011), Blair Shoemaker (2008), Brian Poppa (2001), and Gus Cooper (2000). Drivers from Washington are looking to put an end to the Oregon domination, as “The Beaver State” racers won this event seven times compared to only one for the guys from “The Evergreen State”. Grays Harbor Raceway regulars like Joe German, Scott Miller, Tom Sweatman, and the father-and-son team of Craig and Kyler Moore are looking to win one for the home team and fans. Also on the roster is two-time GHR modified champion Josh Muller. Josh is a native of Montesano who now calls Minot, North Dakota home.

The Modified Nationals are very popular to Grays Harbor Raceway and the fans since its first race back in 2000. The turnout averages to around 55 to 60 cars, and that number has been higher than that many times. This will be my very first time at the Mod Nats, and another sunny and warm weekend is in store.

Time to Review: Notes for July 12-13 
The Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by MAVTV American Real is always a popular draw at Grays Harbor Raceway. When they came for the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Nationals presented by Budweiser with the Northwest Wingless Tour (NWWT) sprints, they turned in a couple of incredible nights of racing and the fans weren’t disappointed. The weather was hot and the action was more so.

Friday's NWWT 30-lap feature was really tight in the first few laps. Sterling Kane came into the weekend as the points leader and led the first lap. Rich Kelley passed Kane down low in turn one on lap two, but Garret Johnson went by both drivers coming out of four. The lead exchanged hands again in turn four, as seventh place starter Pat Canfield went to the inside of Garret on the fifth lap. On lap number ten, the #10 car of Kyle Miller was on the attack from ninth. He passed 12th-starting Evan Margeson for second, and then Canfield at the stripe for the lead. Miller didn’t look back, as he won over Margeson by a healthy margin with Canfield in third.

Three-time and defending ASCS National champion Jason Johnson was the early leader in the ASCS 25-lap A-Main, but it didn’t last long when Travis Rilat took it away on the second lap entering turn three. “Hollywood” Johnny Herrera also made an early pass on “The Ragin’ Cajun”, as he went by for the second spot on the following lap out of turn four. Rilat won it for the ASCS Northwest Region with Herrera, Johnson, and “Full Blown Chaos” Dustin Morgan second through fourth to get locked into Saturday’s 30-lapper. ASCS NW Region points leader and defending champ Roger Crockett rounded out the top five.

Here we go into Saturday. Miller led the distance in the 30-lap non-wing A-Main from the pole and was decisively in control of this thing. Only five cars finished on the lead lap. Miller was ahead of Canfield by half a lap! Kyle Mehner didn’t race on Friday, but he used the outside groove in turns three and four on the 22nd lap to pass Rob Lindsey and Mike Romig to pick up a third-place finish.

The ASCS feature was another exciting one, even though it was plagued with yellow flags. Morgan set the pace and looked strong, but Herrera passed him with a slide job in turns one and two on the ninth lap. Morgan was a victim of another slider on lap 12. This time, it was Johnson in turns three and four. Jason used a slide job on Johnny on the 13th lap in turns one and two, but Johnny regained the lead with a slider of his own in three and four. Jason and Johnny were side-by-side down the backstretch the next lap before Jason did another slider in three and four. That was the winning move. Jeff Swindell and Tony Bruce, Jr. entered the fray in the last third of the race. Bruce momentarily had third down the backchute with six laps to go, but Swindell got the spot back at the line. Tony tried to get by Jeff again on the backstretch two laps later, and made the pass stick. Bruce wasn’t happy with third and passed Herrera with three laps to go for second, but Herrera got it back on the next-to-last lap up high in turn two. No one would catch Johnson, as he got his sixth ASCS National win in '13 and second victory in July to go along with the one at Billings Motorsports Park in Montana last Tuesday. Herrera was second with Bruce, Swindell, and Seth Bergman three through five.

The ASCS and NWWT drivers travel to Cottage Grove Speedway this weekend, and then to Willamette Speedway the following Friday and Saturday. I enjoyed every bit of the racing and I hope everyone felt the same. I present to you chapter number two in my notebook…

Change of the Guard: With Saturday‘s victory, Johnson retook the points lead from Herrera by only three points (2,937 to 2,934) with plenty of racing left to go. Swindell is third with 2,793, followed by Brad Loyet at 2,751 and Bruce at 2,708. Coming into the July 6 race at Hartford, South Dakota’s I-90 Speedway, Herrera had a 56-point edge. Johnson is looking for his fourth title and Herrera is going for his first. Johnny was oh so close of winning the championship in 2011, losing to Shane Stewart by just one point.

Home Again: Bergman and Logan Forler made their trips back to their home state last weekend. Bergman still hails from Snohomish and Orting native Forler resides in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Seth earned the FSR Radiator and Racing Products High Point Driver Award for getting the highest passing points total in heat race action on Friday, while Logan won that award Saturday. Seth had a very strong couple of nights, posting sixth and fifth-place finishes. Logan had to go to the B-Main Friday after losing power on the backstretch while running second on the final lap in the second heat. He got the sixth and final lock-in spot in the B, and passed eight cars to finish 14th in the A. Logan somewhat improved on Saturday by starting the A-Main in fourth, but slipped to tenth in the end. Logan goes into Cottage Grove sixth in points, with Seth not far behind in seventh.

Jeff’s Still In It: Of the top five drivers in the ASCS National points, the one that has been the most consistent is Swindell. Jeff had a streak of eight straight podium finishes during June and July. That includes two wins and claiming the overall championship for the Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek. His streak of podium finishes was snapped at Great Falls, Montana’s Electric City Speedway with a seventh. He was supposed to start seventh in Friday’s A-Main, but went to the pits before the green flag with a flat right rear tire. He had to go back to 21st, but rebounded to finish ninth. The streak that’s still intact for Jeff is top ten finishes and it stands at 13, going back to May 25.

The Fantastic Four: Along with Rilat and Johnson, Forler and Bruce scored victories in the “Northwest Swing”. Forler had a wire-to-wire victory at I-90 Speedway, while Bruce made a stunning last corner pass to win at Electric City Speedway. The other drivers are looking to add their names to the list as they head into Oregon.

Slide Job City: The ASCS drivers gave the Grays Harbor fans more slide jobs than they can count both nights. The race that stuck out for me was in the first half of Friday’s third heat, where Henry Van Dam and Steven Tiner traded sliders for the lead. Henry secured the lead and the eventual win with a turn four slide job on Steven on lap four. It was very reminiscent of the ASCS race at GHR in 2009 when HVD and Tiner went back and forth for second place in B-Main action, with Henry getting it done. Saturday’s A-Main was another exciting display of slide jobs and position changes, despite being slowed down by numerous cautions.

Miller in Multiples: Miller’s win total with the NWWT this season went from two to four with his weekend sweep. He’s the only driver so far with more than one win. Mehner, Kane, Mitch Hoffses, and defending champ Bill Winsley all have a single victory. Cottage Grove Speedway is Miller’s home track and he’s looking to increase his win total this weekend.

Oregon Obliterates, Part II: Like the PHRA dwarf car drivers did in June during Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway, NWWT drivers from Oregon dominated the heat races. Friday’s heats were won by Kane from Albany and Miller, who hails from Eugene. Saturday’s heats were claimed by Sandy’s Mark Herz and Lindsey, who calls Wilsonville home. Brooms out for the Beaver State!

An Antique on Wheels: Astoria, Oregon racer Kelley made his first ever NNWT start last weekend and first race at GHR in about a decade. He brought along a 1996 Gambler that had a dark purple frame and bright green wheels. Rich was in the 360 division in the early '00s and raced with track regulars like Jay Cole, Glenn Borden, Jr., Randy VanAagten, Donny Fry, and Ron Reed. Rich started on the pole in Friday’s feature and had the lead momentarily on the second lap. He pulled into the pits in the closing laps and was scored tenth. Rich's problems continued on Saturday when he stopped on the frontstretch on lap number six in the first heat, and didn’t start the main event. It was still good to see and talk to Rich after a very long absence.

Number for the Weekend: 9. That’s how many times the yellow flag flew in Saturday’s ASCS A-Main. The number of red flags for the whole weekend? Zippo.

Consistency Award: Herrera. Although he lost the points lead to Johnson, “Hollywood” is making the points chase very close with his finishes of third and second. Also getting a pair of top tens were Bruce (seventh and third), Bergman, Morgan (fourth and eighth), Swindell, and Loyet (eighth and sixth). Loyet raced in the B-Main both nights (which he won both times) to get to the A. Friday’s charge through the A gave Brad the Hard Charger Award. He put on a remarkable show in Saturday’s B-Main, where he passed Tiner and Trey Starks up high on the final turns to win from the eighth starting spot.

Hard Luck Award: John Butler. John lost his rear end in time trials on Friday and didn’t make his heat, but did start the main event and finished two laps down in ninth. The dark cloud still hung over John on Saturday before the racing started. The brake line in his SUV was cut on his way to the track, but he still made it. The backbreaker was with four laps to go in the feature, as his engine went kablooey big time on the frontstretch. He drove into the infield and climbed out of his car okay, but very dejected.

Best Looking Car: Tiner. After showing off some gold last year, he had a yellow and black combination with a little bit of red and white. You don’t need to go overboard to make something look good, and Steven makes the #194 car a dazzler.

Next race: The 14th annual Shipwreck Beads Northwest Modified Nationals at GHR July 26 and 27. This two-day show brings in the top drivers from Washington, Oregon, California, and British Columbia. Two rounds of heat races and the Race of Champions take place on the first night, with the dashes and main events on the second. Despite having the home field advantage, racers from Washington have won the event just once when Blair Shoemaker did so in 2008. Jacksonville, Oregon veteran Mark Wauge was last year’s winner.

Jumping the Start: Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Nationals presented by Budweiser 
The Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by MAVTV American Real drivers take on the ASCS Northwest Region Series drivers tomorrow and Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway in the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Nationals presented by Budweiser. The Northwest Wingless Tour (NWWT) sprints are also on the card for both nights.

Shane Stewart was the winner of last year’s rain-delayed preliminary A-Main. The finale took place that same night and Wayne Johnson won a close one. It got very interesting when the caution flag flew on the final lap when Brady Bacon had his right rear tire shred to pieces in turns one and two while running fifth. Wayne crossed the stripe ahead of Stewart in a one-lap dash. Wayne suffered a badly injured leg in a crash at GHR in 2010, so that win was a long time coming.

The national drivers got three races in the books before they travel through the Pacific Northwest. Orting native Logan Forler won last Saturday’s event at I-90 Speedway in Hartford, South Dakota. Two races were held earlier this week in the state of Montana. Three-time and defending series champion Jason Johnson triumphed at Billings Motorsports Park on Tuesday (originally scheduled for Monday, but was postponed due to torrential rain and very high winds). Tony Bruce, Jr. was victorious in an exciting race last night at Electric City Speedway. Tony used a last corner pass on Brad Loyet to steal the win. Joe Ramaker started 18th and worked his way all the way up to second, with Loyet crossing the stripe in third after starting 12th.

Checking out the standings, Johnny Herrera is leading with 2,657 points with Jason Johnson right behind at 2,645. Jeff Swindell has been very consistent as of late, and he finds himself in third with 2,550 points. Loyet is fourth with 2,513 and Bruce is fifth at 2,454.

Roger Crockett is the man to beat in the ASCS Northwest Region, and already well on his way to his fourth title. He handily won the Bully Dog Performance Speedweek Northwest presented by The Contingency Connection thanks to four wins. He swept the two-night show at Cottage Grove Speedway last Friday and Saturday to end Speedweek on a dominating note. Roger has already built up a 195-point advantage over Henry Van Dam, 1,277 to 1,082. Trey Starks is third, just one point behind Van Dam.

The NWWT have six races and five winners so far in 2013. Sterling Kane comes into the weekend as the points leader, followed by defending champ Bill Winsley and Rob Lindsey. Kyle Miller captured the main event last August at GHR, where the NWWT shared the program with the World of Outlaws. A race that was scheduled for May 18 got rained out.

The weather looks absolutely perfect for a weekend of racing, so come over and have some fun!
