Jumping the Start: Champion Racing Oil National Open
This weekend is one of the biggest paying weekends for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Cars. They'll be at Williams Grove Speedway for the Champion Racing Oil National Open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Thursday and Friday's main events pay $10,000 to win, while Saturday's show is a $50,000-to-win affair.

Donny Schatz continues to show the way in points, as he leads Brad Sweet by 94 markers. David Gravel won last Saturday's Outlaws event at Lernerville Speedway and he sits comfortably in the third spot. Shane Stewart and Daryn Pittman are fourth and fifth, respectively.

In last year's 40-lap National Open, Joey Saldana led the first fourteen laps before Sweet took the top spot away on the following lap. Sweet's time in the lead didn't last long when he got crossed up in slower traffic, and that allowed Saldana to get back by for the 16th lap. Danny Dietrich pressured Saldana in the second half of the race and he made the winning pass with only two laps remaining. Dietrich was the lone Pennsylvania Posse driver in the top five, as Saldana, Sweet, Schatz, and Gravel finished second through fifth.

Thursday and Friday's programs will use the traditional Outlaws format. It consists of qualifying, heat races, dashes, and main events. Drivers earn points in all of the races they compete in during the two nights and their point totals will be used to line up Saturday's heats. The top four drivers in combined points are locked into Saturday's dash. Saturday will have heats, a dash, and main events only. Racers will get one more shot to pick up more points and also a chance to get into the big dance. The final point totals will set the lineups for the lower main events.

Race fans will see two main events on Thursday, as the rained-out feature event from the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals on July 22 is going to made up. Greg Hodnett is slated to be on the pole with Gravel starting alongside.

The National Open is one of the biggest races for the Outlaws, so expect a very talented field of drivers. It's a classic case of the Outlaws taking on the Posse. Take your pick and root them on!
